CORE
COMPETENCIES
1.
For whom are the Core Competency Curriculum Guidelines written?
The Core
Competency Curriculum Guidelines (CCCG) are written for judges, court managers,
administrators and their staff, who are responsible for day-to-day court
operations.
2.
Who wrote the Core Competency Curriculum Guidelines?
The
National Association for Court Management and their Professional Development
Advisory Committee (NACM-PDAC) are responsible for the development and creation
of the Core Competency Curriculum Guidelines. The narrative describing
each Core Competency was written by subject experts and practitioners chosen by the
NACM-PDAC; but you wrote the basis for them. Judges, court
managers, administrators and their staff from courts across the country told us
what are the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities they need to do their jobs. For a more complete description of the
development of the Core Competencies click on Overview.
3.
Why are judges included?
Judges
have primary responsibility for courts and court operations.
"Presiding and administrative" judges have formal responsibility for
court operations. Trial and appellate judges have assumed responsibility
for their case dockets, staff, and related administration.
4.
What are the ten Core Competencies?

Core Competencies are ten basic areas of knowledge, skills and abilities that
judges, court managers and administrators and their staff should know and be
able to do:
5.
What are Curriculum Guidelines?
Curriculum
Guidelines are categories of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities within each Core
Competency that are structured to facilitate curriculum development, or that are
based on curriculum that have been previously developed.
6.
What are Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)?
KSAs are
the kernels of what judges, court managers and administrators and their
staff should know.

structured?
Let's
use the Leadership Core Competency as an example. It has five Curriculum
Guidelines and multiple KSAs within each Curriculum Guideline:

8.
How do I use the Core Competencies?
The Core
Competencies are primarily designed for self assessment by individuals and
collective self-assessment by courts and court and professional organizations;
and to provide a structure for curriculum development to provide training and
education to courts and to court and professional organizations.
9.
What do you mean by self-assessment?
To date,
many court professionals and educators have already used the Core Competencies
