About NACM
Improving Public Access to the Courts
"Courts exist to serve the public, not to serve judges, court
managers, or lawyers. Everything that mangers do are but means to an end and that end is
service to the public."
Edward B. McConnell
President Emeritus
National Center for State Courts
Trial courts are public institutions that must be open and accessible. The court
manager's role is to eliminate unnecessary barriers to court services. Location, physical
structure, procedures, language, and the responsiveness of personnel can interfere with
access.
- NACM is committed to improving the public's access to trial courts and
to educating the public on the role of the courts.
- NACM coordinates Law Day programs throughout the country through its
active and creative public information service.
- NACM publishes information brochures and how-to articles to assist
court managers and managing judges in making courts accessible.
- NACM makes available information on successful projects from its
extensive network of courts in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries.
- NACM conducts educational programs on topics related to the Americans
with Disabilities Act, alternative dispute resolution projects, and the use of
interpreters in courts.
- NACM participates in research to help courts reduce costs and eliminate
delay.
